Backstage at Margaret Howell SS14
04 October 13
When it comes to great shows at Fashion Week, the things I love to shoot and the shows that I'm hyped about usually have no relation to the stuff I actually wear. I get super excited about flouncy dresses and neon lipstick and stacked heels and whatnot, but irl I'm in my black jeans, button down and trainers (guess why I'm not a fashion blogger). So shooting the Margaret Howell show this season was doubly exciting, because I actually love Margaret Howell, for me, not just for ~fashion~. I have a Margaret Howell duffle coat, I can see myself wearing these clothes, it's a whole different thing.
Every season the Wigmore Street shop is transformed into the show venue, the office space used for backstage a breath of fresh air compared to the cramped tents and pitch black basements we're usually accustomed to. Natural light backstage is a treat in itself! I've also never seen a backstage that could be better described as "an oasis of calm". No chaos, no stress, not even any moaning about the early call time. Maybe the breakfast spread had something to do with everyone's high spirits (see here re: backstage food), but I think it's just an extension of the whole MH philosophy in practice.
Anyway, the clothes were flawless in their trademark Margaret Howell simplicity, the show was one of the highlights of my week and I was riding high on it for the rest of the day. Thank god for Margaret Howell tbh.

I’d buy an entire capsule wardrobe from MH and wear nothing else if I could afford it. As it is, I’m just setting out to copy everything by sewing it myself.

What beautiful photography! Kudos for a terrific post. I’ve been a fan of MH for a long time, but that link to the Guardian article was perfect, that’s been my philosophy for many years, and she says it so well.

It’s easy to see why MH has a such dedicated following, I’ve never owned a piece but I’m good at loosing ebay bits for her button downs!
