The first day of the rest of my life with the 1.2
17 May 11
After over five years of faithful service my usual lens has finally, tragically, croaked it. It had been having focusing issues for a while, but the final blow was a drop on the concrete floor at the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, after which it stopped focusing completely. Considering I treated it pretty terribly, five years isn't bad going and it meant that I could finally justify getting the 1.2. I can't even describe how utterly overjoyed I am with the 1.2. It's the perfect lens.
These are just some photos I took the first day I got it, around Brighton and at afternoon tea with Andrew and my parents for my birthday. Seeing them all together, it looks like a romp through whimsical blogger cliches! Oh dear.

for me, it doesn’t get better than 50mm 1.2 and once an L lens, you get what is called the L disease :)

Oh wow that looks like the perfect lens. Pity I’m to poor, I’ll just have to get the 1.4 instead…

Perfect DOF and so sharp! Lovelyyy. I will have to be stuck with the 1.8 for a while longer yet. :(

michelle – do you hate it? i’m THIS close to getting one – my shots are mostly clothing photos for an etsy shop taken inside with natural light. from what i’ve read it seems like the 1.8 is a good (and holy cheap) choice, but i’d love to hear an honest opinion!

oh hi there, horse with my name!
these are gorgeous and fantastic. i’m thinking of getting the cheapie Canon 50mm F/1.8 to start my foray into lenses that didn’t come with my camera – definitely not going to be nearly as awesome as your 1.2 but hopefully a step in the right direction.

Nice Kris, very nice. WHo cares about clichés? I don’t! It’s perfectly acceptable if it’s done right, which is the case here.
I had the same lens, only Nikon. I was in Miami a few months ago and I dropped it by the pool, it got waterlogged and smashed. It still works on occasion, but sometimes it won’t even allow photos to be taken. I was gutted because it was almost £900. It’ll be a while before I replace it. I have the 35mm, 50mm & 80mm all in f/1.8, which are all fantastic, but I miss my 1.2 very much! RIP little lens!
Good job with all the recent shots. :)
