The mice
29 March 09
I'm working flat out on a picture book for uni and the Macmillan prize at the moment. These are just some sketches of the characters in their environment, today I'm working on getting the whole story board laid out. 32 pages! This is so much harder than I though it would be. I'm writing my own story, trying to make it appeal to children while still looking good/like me and attempting to avoid stereotypical representations of gender roles via the girl and boy mice. I'm a feminist, these things matter.

This looks glorious. I’ve always wanted to do childrens books, but I’m somewhat lacking (to put it nicely!) in the drawing stakes!

Will you be showing the final product? It looks lovely and I bet the book will be a heavyweight competitor.
I’m excited that you’re avoiding gender stereotypes. That’s so rare in any childrens’ products these days, and I believe they really do make a difference in the way children carry themselves as they grow older.

This actually looks like one of the best children’s books ever. I feel like children’s books and television and toys has gone downhill since I was a kid (but then I suppose all people feel like that) – anyway, I bet yours would bring it up to standard!
I really hope you win, you deserve it.

Echoing kacia, I think it’s awesome you’re making this book and staying aware of gender roles. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age, if you go to any bookstore and pick up a popular children’s book there’ll most likely still be outdated ideas and themes inside!
Can’t wait to see this finished… Their bellies in the last sketch are so adorable!

Oh I know exactly how you feel! I’m in my last year too (I also study Illustration :)) and I’m going to make a graphic novel and it’s so much work! I still need to make a storyboard but I’m really procastinating… Your sketches look great, the mice are so cute :D And when is your deadline/graduation?
Anyway, good luck with it! I’m sure it will be great :)
