Mosaic magic

I saw this mosaic at The Russian Museum in St Petersburg and I'm still in awe. At first glance it looks just like a painting, but a closer look reveals thousands of tiny pices. It's a portrait of Yelizaveta Petrovna and it's a shame that the artist is unknown, because I think it's pretty amazing.

Absolutely stunning. Mosaics like these are why I started making mosaics…until I tried nipping tile… not only is it a true art, it requires a lot of muscle! Beautiful photos!
