Deep in the forest of Russian fairyland...
25 February 08
These are illustrations from a uni project I was working on a few weeks ago, when I was having my blogging block :P.
Old Peter's Russian Tales by Arthur Ransome was the book I chose to illustrate (you can read it in full at the link if you fancy it) because I recognised a lot of the stories from my childhood, though I think some things got lost in translation in this version! Some of it makes very little sense.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with how these turned out. I spent days making the cardboard house and the sets (everything is basically made out of paper) before going at it with lamps and torches and coloured gels for lighting. I wanted it to look a bit fake and hodgepodge, like a slightly rubbish toy theatre.

These are magnificent, especially the boat. It could very well be the flying ship in which Peter Pan returns Wendy and her family back home to England. Gorgeous.

these kind of reminded me a little of Yuri Norstein, whose animations I highly recommend if you haven’t already seen.
