My matryoshka
10 September 07
I bought some blank russian dolls to paint and can't wait to get started. I wasn't sure what kind of paint to use, but after a bit of discussion on flickr it looks like acrylic and a coat of varnish will be sufficient. Do let me know if you have any tips or insider info for painting on wood! I'm a total newbie at it.
A flickr pal showed me a link to a show at The Wurst gallery where a number of artists customised russian dolls. They're all very cool, but I think my favourite is by Carson Ellis. It looks like she has a nice blog too!

I do know that if you draw your design on the wood with a hard pencil, then put about 3 coats of acrylic matte gel medium (let dry in between) on the wood it creates a layer so that if you mess up you can just wipe off the paint with a wet towel and then you don’t lose your design! I hope that made sense.. haha

Oh, wow. The Carson Ellis ones are clearly the best, but the Saiman Chow ones are a ridiculously close second. I didn’t even know you could buy blank nesting dolls! Very cool.

I know this is totally not your style, but a celebrity set of matryoshka dolls would be amazing. The littlest one could be Mary-Kate Olsen or Nicole Ritchie! !!!!!!! Ahem.

Your photos are just amazing. I know you use a 5D, but what lens is that? These recent posts have been beautiful.
